一種民俗 ， 源於佛教 。 中國佛教徒於農曆七月十五日舉行盂蘭盆會 ， 普施一切餓鬼 。 民間以放水燈通知水中鬼魂和餓鬼 ， 來接受拖捨 。 水燈一般都以色紙作成蓮花形 。 在臺灣是用竹條和紙糊製 ， 有圓形燈或小屋形的紙厝 。 在普渡的前一天 ， 由僧人或道士引導遊行 ， 持圓形燈在前頭 ， 拿紙厝在最後 。 行至河邊將燈置在水燈筏上 ， 放入水中 ， 稱為 「 放水燈 」 。
