1. (N) || 一種民俗，源於佛教。中國佛教徒於農曆七月十五日舉行盂蘭盆會，普施一切餓鬼。民間以放水燈通知水中鬼魂和餓鬼，來接受拖捨。水燈一般都以色紙作成蓮花形。在臺灣是用竹條和紙糊製，有圓形燈或小屋形的紙厝。在普渡的前一天，由僧人或道士引導遊行，持圓形燈在前頭，拿紙厝在最後。行至河邊將燈置在水燈筏上，放入水中，稱為「放水燈」。
